St John the Baptist
It all started when…
St Helen’s built a ‘chapel of ease’ in 1857 to serve the town growing up the hill. In 1897, the current church was built, and there has been a worshipping community here ever since.

What’s on on A Sunday?
10:30am. On most Sundays this is a contemporary and liturgical service, with children going to age groups part way through. On the 1st Sunday of each month we are a little more formal, and celebrate Holy Communion.
In the evening we join together at St Andrew's at 6pm.
Here are a few practical questions you might have if you are visiting us for the first time:
CAN I PARK AT THE CHURCH?
We have plenty of parking! There are spaces near the door reserved for people with a disability.
WHich Entrance do I use?
The main entrance to St Johns church is at the back: follow the signs and someone will greet you at the door to the entrance hall.
Once inside, sit anywhere you like.
HOW LONG ARE THE SERVICES?
Our 10.30 service generally finishes around noon, and afterwards we share fellowship together over refreshments.
WHAT provision is there for CHILDREN?
We hope your children will enjoy themselves. We frequently stay together for the whole service believing that children learn best how to worship by copying and joining in with the adults, but in term time there is age-appropriate Bible teaching during the sermon, led by our children’s team, who all have DBS (safeguarding) checks. Children under 3 can be cared for in the crèche.
WHAT ABOUT Teenagers?
Our young people stay in the services, and worship and serve with the rest of the Church Family. You might see some in the Music or Tech teams, or reading or praying! There are mini clipboards with sheets to take notes during the sermon available at St Johns to help our young people engage with the preaching.
ACCESSibility
There is a slope up to the main entrance The rest of the church and ground floor is completely flat. If you come in a wheelchair there are allocated spaces about half way down the church, or we can make room wherever you would like to sit. There is an accessible toilet and baby changing room. Some of our children’s activities are on our lower floor, which is fully accessible and can be reached by a lift. There is a hearing loop available.
Holy COMMUNION
Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month. We share alcoholic wine and wheat bread for communion, but if you would prefer gluten free bread or non-alcoholic wine please tell the person serving you.
